As part of Trócaire’s Lenten campaign, we recently produced a target=”_blank”>digital animation around the story of Digna Portilla, the five-year-old girl on this year’s Trócaire box.
Illustrated by Alan Carruthers and with audio by The Sound Butler, it tells the story of her life and her parents in La Confianza in Honduras and attempts to humanise their everyday struggle.
In La Confianza communities are being tortured and attacked by private security employed by landlords to take their small plots. The charity has helped 62,000 families get legal title to their land in the region.
The story is told through the narration of an Irish family featuring the voices of a father, mother and their five-year-old daughter that have all written letters to the Honduran family with the narrative strands highlighting the difference between our world and theirs.
All three voices declare that they want to help but they don’t know how before a voiceover from Trocaire says that you can help by sending a message to the president of Honduras asking him to keep Digna safe.
With support from Trócaire, Digna’s community is in the process of securing ownership of their land.
